I am Chiara Paola Ratti, a business designer, concept creator, and biomimicry facilitator.
Through the Lichens Project, I explore how people can stay in relationship with themselves, others, and the natural world while working within systems that often pull them away from it.
I work with individuals and small teams, often in the climate and sustainability fields, who are experiencing forms of exhaustion or disconnection in their work.
Not as something to fix within the person, but as something that emerges from how work and environments are currently shaped.
The work takes place through conversations, workshops, and longer processes.
It begins by noticing how someone is actually functioning, in their body, their attention, and their way of relating, and exploring how these patterns might shift when seen through living systems principles.
This approach is informed by biomimicry, systems thinking, and embodied practices.
Lichens: Nature’s Living Bridges
Lichens are everywhere. You can find them on rocks, trees, rooftops, even in the harshest deserts and frozen tundra. They are not plants, not fungi, not algae, they are a living collaboration. A fusion of different species that come together to create something entirely new and unique. They are resilient, adaptable, and thrive where most life cannot.
A Tapestry of Life & Resilience
Lichens embody the essence of the Lichens Project, a living reflection of interconnectedness, renewal, and adaptability. They inspire us to embrace nature’s intelligence and move through life with fluidity and presence.
Global Presence. Found everywhere across the globe.
Yet One of a Kind. Each lichen carries the unique imprint of its environment.
Masters of Adaptation. Thriving in the harshest conditions, they teach us resilience.
Keepers of Purity. Flourishing only in non-toxic environments.
Ecosystem Builders. Tiny world of interconnected life, reminding us of the power of co-creation.
Nature’s Messengers. Spreading across vast distances, much like ideas and regenerative movements.
Lichens, the heart of our inspiration, are pioneers of resilience. They thrive in the harshest conditions yet cannot exist in polluted spaces. In their simplicity and interconnectedness, they embody our core values: adaptability, collaboration, and sustainability. Their ability to flourish against adversity reveals what’s possible when we align with nature’s wisdom.
Lichens are not singular organisms, but relationships.
They form through collaboration, adaptation, and attention to context.
This is the lens this work grows from.
Biomimicry is a practice of learning
from living systems.
It invites us
to observe and speak
the interconnected language of Nature.
How Nature adapts,
and sustains itself over time, and to translate these principles into the way we design, work, and live.
Rather than creating solutions,
we can begin with attunement.
Inner Biomimicry brings this perspective closer.Exploring how the same principles that shape ecosystems are present within our bodies, our behaviours, and the way we relate to one another. It is a way of recognising ourselves as living systems, and of allowing our ways of working and being to reorganise from that place.
Nature is home. By reconnecting with it, we restore balance within ourselves and the world.
Like lichens, pioneers of resilience and adaptability, we can thrive, innovate, and regenerate while staying deeply rooted in the systems that sustain us.
Lichens Project creates spaces and experiences that help individuals and communities rediscover together this connection.
